The winner of the prize Translator’s Chair of the Year 2009 Danutė Sirijos Giraitė will be honoured at Vilnius Picture Gallery on the 9th of February.
The Lithuanian PEN Centre granted the prize to her for the translation from Estonian of the novel “Truth and Justice” of Anton Hansen Tammsaare published by Vaga Publishing House, i.e., for rendering the ancient spirit of the work, revealed culture colours and wonderful sense of language.
D.Sirijos Giraitė studied the Estonian Language and Literature at Tartu University (Estonia) in 1968-1972. In 1979 she graduated from Vilnius University, where she studied the Russian Language and Literature as well as the Polish Language. D.Sirijos Giraitė has translated more than 30 works of fiction from Estonian, Finnish and English.
The translator was awarded with the Estonian literature prize in 1986 and with the Order of 5th Degree of Estonian Virgin Mary’s Land Cross in 1999.
Earlier winners of the prize of the Lithuanian PEN Centre are translators Almis Grybauskas, Laimantas Jonušys, Diana Bučiūtė, Antanas Gailius, Leonas Petravičius, Aida Krilavičienė, Linas Rybelis, Danguolė Žalytė, Eglė Išganaitytė. D.Sirijos Giraitė is the 10th winner of the prize “Translator’s Chair”.
