The photography album of Mindaugas Kavaliauskas “Portrait of Kražiai” will be presented in Kaunas, at the Historical Presidents’ House (Vilniaus Str. 33) on the 14th of January at 5 p.m. The event is free of charge.
Kražiai town has left many meaningful traces in the history of Lithuania. However, what manifestations of spiritual heritage may be seen and photographed in Kražiai in the 21st century?
As the historian Egidijus Aleksandravičius states in the review of the album, “things captured by the camera of Mindaugas Kavaliauskas do not intend to prove the touristic uniqueness of Kražiai; instead, the daily life of the community confronting the transition period and hardships of the new wild capitalism is pictured.”
According to the author of photographs, pre-European Lithuania, when it was known that butter, cheese and sausage started from grass and hay and that festivals were not caused by discounts in shopping centres, is pictured in photographs that form “Portrait of Kražiai”. It is Lithuania, where reality was without show elements and where people rejoiced and mourned not for others to see it but for the life to be full of various experiences.
The album of 152 pages offers 142 coloured photographs created in 2002-2003. It is the first cycle of colour photography of Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, who aimed to show the colours of daily life changing swiftly. It is also the first monographic album of the photographer.
