In brief: The poet Justinas Marcinkevičius celebrating his 80th birthday became the winner of the nomination “Man – Coeval” in the election of national values of Respublika. The poet recognised by all generations of Lithuanians is sure that each of us is born to be a good man. Still, this goodness is often dwarfed by material greed.
“The thought about goodness is not my invention. Many people, especially representatives of culture, art and science, have spoken about it many times on various occasions. Perhaps this “spiritual business” was forgotten in Lithuania due to the complicated period experienced by the nation: wars, post-war fights. All this erased the goodness of a human being; and this is why it started appearing in my poems accidentally. If they are worth something and are remembered sometimes, I thank God for it,” the poet J.Marcinkevičius speaks in the interview.
The poet believes that a man is born to be good. If we look at all forms of live in the pre-historical and historical world, goodness may be noticed even among animals. Therefore, it is really mandatory for a human being.
The artist regrets that people have given priority to the material side of freedom, and it is believed that one may steal, rob and take things away. The Baltic Road seems to have been in pre-historical times. It seems that no spirit, unity and preparation to help each other ever existed.
“The problem of survival of the nation will depend on our attitude, our behaviour and patience to cherish, continue and develop the main national values," the poet states.
